DIBELS
Your child will be assessed with DIBELS three times this year. Practice sheets will be sent home to help your child prepare. Please take the "no stress" approach. Children should know that these practice sheets will help to improve their reading. They should not be concerned about a score on a test.
The assessments include Letter Naming Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency, Nonsense Word Fluency, and Word Reading Fluency, and Reading Fluency.

DIBELS Word Reading Fluency (WRF)DIBELS Word Reading Fluency (WRF) is a standardized, individually administered assessment that provides a measure of Alphabetic Principle and Reading Fluency skills. Students read individual words aloud from a word list printed on a sheet of paper for one minute. Each administration includes up to 140 stimulus words presented five per row on a single sheet of paper. The student reads words for one minute, and the score is the number of words read.
WRF administered is administered in Kindergarten through 3rd Grade. How does WRF link to the Big Ideas in Beginning Reading? WRF measures two of the Big Ideas in Beginning Reading: Alphabetic Principle and Reading Accuracy and Fluency. |
DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (ORF)DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) is a measure that assesses Accuracy and Fluency with Text, the ability to effortlessly translate letters to sounds and sounds to words. The fluent reader is one whose decoding processes are automatic, requiring no conscious attention. Such capacity then enables readers to allocate their attention to the comprehension and meaning of the text.
The passages are calibrated for each grade level. Student performance is measured by having students read a passage aloud for one minute. Words omitted, substituted, and hesitations of more than three seconds are scored as errors. Words self-corrected within three seconds are scored as accurate. The number of correct words per minute is the oral reading fluency score. ORF is administered in 1st Grade through 8th Grade. |
