Hello Room 19 Families,
I know it's been a while since I wrote an update. Our room parent, Cathy, has been handling most of the communication, but I wanted to reach out tonight to let you know how impressive your children are in mathematics!
Today was an exciting day because we had some classroom visitors observe us in action. Over the course of the year, I have been part of a Math Lesson Study with the California Action Network for Mathematics Excellence and Equity (CANMEE) in partnership with the California Science Project, TODOS, CMC-South, and LA County Office of Education. We had visitors from some of these groups, along with Dr. Collier and the rest of the Lesson Study team at Roscomare: Mrs. Orr, Mrs. Apanay, Mrs. Wong, and Mrs. Phillips.
In addition to learning math content (in particular adding within 20 and using different strategies to add greater numbers), we have been working on problem solving and perseverance, and communicating our thinking to others. The kids in my class have been working hard to plan the first grade field trip, which will be sometime in May.
Many parents have been asking to chaperone, so I'm glad to hear that students are talking to you about what we are doing in class! Information about where and when will be sent out in a couple of months, but I will say that we are very limited in the number of adults we can bring. Our head room parent will accompany us, and I will find out if they will allow any other chaperones. If they do, I will let you know, but as of now, it looks like we are only allowed one other adult.
The visitors had so many positive things to say about the work we are doing in Room 19. They were impressed that first graders were able to both collaborate and work independently on a rigorous problem. Today's problem was part of a greater unit; The unit plan is below. Because we had so many absences last week, I decided to wait on lesson 4. We will tackle that one after we finish with Lesson 5.
Please ask your child about the work he/she has been doing in math. I will update the pictures link over the next couple of days. In addition to some pictures, I will post some of the charts from the share-out portion of the lessons. Basically, I record what the student Presenter shares so that we have a reference of shared strategies in one place.
