Our Driving Question:
How can we use art to persuade others to make a change?
Based on what we learned, we decided to try to raise awareness of the overuse of plastic, namely water bottles. We collected bottle lids and caps and are going to make a mural. Mrs. Polay soaked the lids and caps in bleach and let them air dry to make sure they were safe for us to use.
We are busy writing persuasive essays and other opinion pieces to try to use our words to make a difference. We each made individual art pieces that will accompany the class mural. We are also incorporating math and social studies.

Math PBLWe had a giant counting collection! We learned how to make a tally chart to help record our data. Then, we compared data and made a class graph. We are almost done adding the amounts for a final total.
We also figured out how many plastic water bottles our class has saved this year by choosing not to serve them at class parties and celebrations. We've had 15 celebrations so far. That's a lot of water bottles that we have kept from the ocean! |
Social Studies PBLWe used data published by the Ocean Conservancy about U.S. states and the countries around the world that helped in beach clean ups and whose scientists are trying to make a difference with their research. We learned how to use an Atlas and labeled our own maps with the names of the continents and oceans.
