Hello Families,

It's our last week at school in 2014! It will be a busy week, and I will try to keep the homework to a minimum. There will be nightly homework instead of the week-long packet.

I hope to see you at our winter party Tuesday from 11:30 - 1:00. Thank you the Amin family and everyone else who signed up to bring something for lunch. Thank you Miranda and Kimberly for planning it!

Winter Sing information came home Friday. We hope to see you there. You can find the schedule in the Warner What's Happening Newsletter. Please have your child wear black bottoms and a plain, white shirt.

Friday is a minimum day, which means school begins at 8 am and dismisses at 12:30.

I posted a slew of technology projects on our technology page. I will post more this week and will continue to update the page throughout the year. Thank you SO much for making them possible!

I am thrilled to see that more of our families have donated to the Warner Annual Fund. It is great to see that you value what the Annual Fund makes possible. Without your donations, Warner would not be able to continue to fund the enrichment programs and to purchase extra teachers, making split classes and large class sizes inevitable. As a Warner parent, I was happy to donate to the fund, because I know first-hand what our school would be like without the fundraising efforts. The unfortunate reality is that the state does not provide us with the funds that we need to really enrich our children's education. It is up to us to build the school we want. I am doing my small (but important) share by teaching your children in the best way that I can and by contributing to the Annual Fund as a parent. I hope you will, too.

If you haven't donated, it is not too late - please - we need all the help we can get! If you have donated, thank you for doing your part.

All the best,
Christina Polay

Hello Families,

Thanks for coming to see our violin performance! I posted some pictures here.

We had a first bi-monthly cumulative math quiz on Friday. They will be sent home tomorrow. We will work on correcting a few problems in class. It is a good idea for students to review problems they got wrong and work to import on those types of problems on the next quiz, which will be December 18 or 19 (depending on our Winter Sing performance. Most likely, we will start it Thursday and finish it Friday.).  There are only a few new standards addressed each quiz. The majority are review problems, so these quizzes should not be stressful.

Thank you for signing and returning the envelopes. I will send them home periodically so that you are aware of your child's progress. Much of what we do in class on a daily basis isn't worksheets, so keep in mind that what you see is a fraction of how students are being assessed. Also, don't worry too much if your child gets a low grade on one assignment. What matters is mastery after repeated exposure of concepts.

I have started posting some of the technology projects here. Everything you donated has come in and I finished putting together the cart after school on Friday. We are finding our groove and have really started to get a hang of some of the apps! Thank you SO much for everything.

Literature Circles: Please make sure materials are brought to school every day. Our next meeting is Tuesday. Most have finished the job sheets already.

This week's assignments:
  • LEXIA - Don't forget to do at least 20 minutes a week.
  • Math: 2 math practice sheets on fractions.
  • Math: Problem solving tasks.
  • Poem of the Week assignments.
  • Spelling, vocabulary, word part quizzes are this Friday.
  • Reading log only (no paragraph).
  • Biography book report is due Monday, December 15.

Be on the lookout for information about our class winter party and the Winter Sing performances.

Have a great week,
Christina Polay

Update - December 1

Hello Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday and break. It's hard to believe it's already December! My family traveled to the Grand Canyon and to Santa Fe, so I wasn't able to send an update yesterday.

I created a new link under the "Other" tab: Technology Projects. I will post some of our projects here. This is where you can listen to our persuasive turkey podcasts. You will also see some of our concrete poems and our mineral posters soon.

There are some new pictures posted.

Literature Circles: This is similar to a book club. Students chose/were assigned a literature circle book and were given an assignment sheet. We will have time in class each day to read and to work on our weekly assignments, but some of the work will have to be done at home. We will meet with our literature circle group each Tuesday to discuss the reading and share our work. Students will rotate jobs and will be given a new assignment sheet each week, to be finished before Tuesday's meeting. Our first meeting is tomorrow, Tuesday, December 2.

Math Quizzes: We will begin taking bi-monthly quizzes in math that are cumulative (they will include standards from the entire year). Students will be given a prequiz that is similar to the quiz, and should use it to improve their score on the quiz. We will take the prequiz tomorrow and the quiz Friday.

We will learn a new set of word parts this week - the Apollo Set. We will take the spelling, vocabulary, and word part quizzes on Friday, December 12.

Reminders:

  • If you have not done so already, please sign the front of the report card envelope and return it to school.
  • Invitations went home November 21 for our violin performance this Friday. Students should wear white tops and black bottoms. Our class will perform in the Amin Family Auditorium at 1:35. Please wait until the doors open to enter, as another class will be performing before us. You will get to see the UCLA students leading our class in a lesson. We will play a couple of songs.
  • Biography book reports are due December 15.

This week's homework assignments:
  • I'd Rather Read log and response.
  • Math problem solving and practice sheets.
  • Social Studies - Read pages 37 - 40 of Our California. Answer questions 1 - 2 on pages 38-39 (write in the workbook), and questions 1-2 on page 40. Then, complete the tree map with details from the reading.

Have a great week,
Christina Polay
