Hello everyone,

I hope you enjoyed the Thanksgiving break!

Our last violin class is on December 4. Parents are welcome to come and see us perform the three songs we have been working on. Our class is from 1:35 - 2:05 in the auditorium. Please wait outside until that time, as another class will be performing before us.

This week's homework assignments, due Monday, December 7:
1. I'd Rather Read log and paragraph
•   Choose a new question to answer. The paragraph should be written about the book you are reading at home. Be sure to include the name of the book and the author in the first sentence, just like we practiced in class.

2. Math: Problem solving tasks and practice sheet.

3. Social Studies:
  • Read pages 37-40 of Our California and answer all questions, including the "Vocabulary" and "Reading" sections on page 37.
  • Six word summary: Complete a six-word-or-less summary for each explorer.

4. Reading Olympians - Iris Set: Iris set journal due Monday. The quizzes will be on Friday, December 11.

5. Empty egg carton: Please bring in an empty, but clean egg carton (that held 12 eggs).

Have a great week,
Christina Polay

Hello everyone,

Thanks to everyone who drove on the trip last week, and to Farnaz Manavi for taking care of all of the paperwork and for providing the snack!

A new field trip slip went home Friday. Please return it signed tomorrow so that we can meet LAUSD's timeline for approval. Tentatively, we are going to the Metropolitan Water District on December 10. We will learn about how water was used and transported in the 1800s, how it is transported today, and what we can do to ensure we have clean water in the future. It is a great opportunity, so please return the slips - thank you!

This week's homework assignments are due Friday, November 20.
1. Reading Log: Only the log is due this week, not the paragraph.

2. Poem of the Week: "I Was Walking in a Circle" by Jack Prelutsky
  • Neat and thorough responses only! Write in complete sentences and restate the questions.

3. Math: Everyday Arrays project (You will be given more specific directions in class.)
  • Search for 6 -10 arrays in your home, neighborhood, or supermarket.
  • Draw or photograph each array and explain where you saw it.
  • Describe how many rows, how many objects in each row, and the total number of objects in each array you find.
  • Write a number story and equation for each array.

4. Math: Practice Sheet

5. Science: Review sheet.

Hello everyone,

I hope you had a nice Halloween. A big thank you to Arman's mom, Shadiar, and Mira's mom, Micah for helping put together our fun Halloween activity on Friday. Thank you to the other parents who attended and helped with our engineering challenge. We had a great time! I added some pictures here.

The Nemesis set quizzes are this Friday. We will also take interim assessments in math and language arts using the testing iPads. They are formative assessments that will serve many purposes - the two most important: 1)They will help guide my instruction. 2)They will serve as a practice for the end-of-the-year Smarter Balanced Assessments. Parents, there is nothing in particular your child can do to prepare, however, if needed, please make sure you are making time for your child to practice his/her basic math facts.

This week's homework assignments, due November 9:

1. I'd Rather Read log and paragraph.
•   Choose a new question to answer. The paragraph should be written about the book you are reading at home. Be sure to include the name of the book and the author in the first sentence, just like we practiced in class.

2. Math:
  • Problem solving tasks 1 and 2. Read, draw, write! Students must read the problem, draw the problem, and write an answer statement BEFORE solving.
  • Practice sheets.
  • Mental Math: Students will practice their mental math strategies... one problem a night - Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. This is the only part of the homework due Thursday.
  • Factors and Multiples Poster: Make a poster showing the factors and multiples of a given number, which you will be assigned in class. Click the link for examples and directions.

3. Earth Science:
  • Read pages 228-231 of Science Resources. Answer the questions on the sheet (not the ones in the book).

4. Reading Olympians - Nemesis Set:
  • Use the concentration cards from class to study for Friday's quiz.
  • Optional: Spelling menu.

Have a great week,
Christina Polay
