Hello Parents,

This week, we will continue to produce three short videos centered around a Halloween theme -- Character's Dressed as Characters!

Our Helios Set quizzes will be this Thursday. Click for the spelling and vocabulary list and the word parts.

I have added a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) page to my website - under "Science." I will rotate an engineer challenge into my homework. Students will choose one challenge from a list to do at home when assigned. They will do about 2 of these challenges per month. This assignment will be rotated with the Poem of the Week and Video Writing Prompt homework. Even though they might want to do several of these at once, please have your child choose one only when assigned. Please let me know how these challenges pan out. Take a picture or video if you can.

We will also be doing more S.T.E.A.M. challenges in the classroom, sometimes with our kindergarten buddies. We are going to be learning about and using the engineering design process for our challenges.

Please send your child to school with an empty (and clean) dozen egg carton this week or next.

We were scheduled to go on a field trip on November 6 to the Science Center and Natural History Museum, but it is being rescheduled because my class will open its doors to principals and teachers for the lab school visit that day. Ms. Aviv and I will take our classes sometime after the new year.

This week's homework:
  • I'd Rather Read log and response.
  • Math - problem solving tasks.
  • Math - practice sheet.
  • Spelling Menu - choose 2 activities.
  • S.T.E.A.M. at home challenge - choose one from the menu. Complete the Think Like an Engineer sheet.

Have a great week,
Christina Polay

Hello Parents,

Conferences continue this week. Our picture day is this Tuesday.

Click here to access Warner's Haunt page. It will be a lot of fun and we need everyone's help. If you have not yet done so, please sign up to work a shift. All families are needed! Click here to visit the Sign Up Genius page. If you signed up at Back to School morning, but do not see your name, please sign up again.

This week we will catch-up on unfinished assignments. We will not have a new word part set, spelling, or vocabulary quiz. Instead, we will spend time making up assignments and retaking any word part quizzes (optional - if they did not score 100%).

Homework for the week:
  • Reading Log and response.
  • Science: Students will watch a video of a portion of Friday's science lab with Ms. Taylor. They will write a paragraph about what they learned and post it on my site. If your child does not have access to a computer to type the paragraph and post it on the blog, please have him or her let me know early in the week. I will make my computer available after school or make other arrangements. The organization and writing of the paragraph should first be done on paper. This assignment is posted on the Science page (click, "What was the big idea in Science Lab?" and then "Homework - Science Lab: October 10") or click here to go straight there.
  • Math: Problem Solving Tasks (4)
  • Math: Students will be given paper to make a poster showing all of the factors and at least ten multiples of a given number. (They will be given their number on Monday after we discuss the terms "prime and composite.") Click here for more information.

The deadline to sign your child up for the April 17th Sacramento trip is this Wednesday, October 15. Only the registration fee is due then. A lottery to choose the parent chaperones will be held in December.

Have a great week!

Hello Parents,

It was great seeing so many of you at the Fourth Grade social last Wednesday night.

Earlier today, I sent out my donation page for Digital Wish. Since Back to School morning, we have explored options to equip my class with iPads. The district does not currently allow for Bring Your Own Device, so my focus has shifted. Through Digital Wish (a non-profit organization similar to Donors Choose), I hope to buy as many iPad minis with cases as I can to start using technology in groups. Click here to see the wish list. Donors can make a tax-deductible donation by choosing an iPad and case from the list, or by donating any amount of money to my digital wish page, which will be used to purchase iPad minis. Thank you for all of your patience and support - and for the tireless efforts of Sarah and Sabine!

Congratulations Zachary for being the first this year to join the Scholar Mastery Club Hall of fame!

This week, conferences continue and dismissal is at 2 pm, except for Tuesday (1:43 pm). Conference schedule link: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0E4FAFAD29A4F85-october

We began violin lessons on Friday through UCLA. We will have thirty-minute lessons once or twice a week from now through December 4, and will perform a short recital on December 5.

Please sign up to volunteer at the Haunt. You can sign-up at your parent-teacher conference. I will create a sign-up genius as well.

Our Nemesis word part quiz, the spelling quiz, and the vocabulary quiz are on Wednesday.

We have our first Social Studies test this Friday. Scholars were given a study guide, flash cards, and an optional study packet last week.

Homework this week:
  • Study for the Social Studies test.
  • Study for the word part, spelling, and vocabulary quizzes.
  • I'd Rather Read log and response paragraph.
  • Science: Complete assignment sheet using your science composition book and pages 202-205 of the science textbook.
  • Math: Two problem-solving sheets. We are working on drawing bar diagrams, also called tape diagrams. These are not bar graphs. Ask me if you need help please!
  • Math: Practice sheet on multiples and factors.

Have a great week,

Christina Polay
