Hello everyone,

We are almost to our goal of 100% participation for the Warner Annual Fund! Let's get there this week. Please send in your donations so that we can meet our goal and have a fun rock climbing party, too.

Book Talk/Project Information:
There is not one set due date for the class. Students signed up for a presentation date. On that day, in addition to presenting a Book Talk, students will turn in:
  1. Character Questions Sheet
  2. Story Frame Form
  3. a project (Students selected one from a menu of about 30. It is up to each student to ensure that the project reflects strong knowledge of the book, includes details, and text evidence.)
  4. after the presentation, the notecards they used to deliver the Book Talk (Students should use the Book Talk Checklist to prepare for the presentation.)

Literature Circles will be Wednesday morning instead of Tuesday because we have art with Mrs. Waldner. :)

Homework Assignments:
  • Social Studies: Read each caption on "Indians of the Missions" and answer the questions.
  • Social Studies: Study Guide - Quiz this Friday, February 27. The Study Guide is due Wednesday.
  • Math problem solving and practice sheets.
  • Science: Response Sheet - Current Attractions. Students should refer to the textbook and their science notebooks when answering the questions. Include as much science vocabulary and concepts as possible.
  • I'd Rather Read Log and response sheet.
  • UCLA Sustainable Youth Homework: Talk to parents about composting and go to a farmer's market!

Our end-of-the-unit Science text is on Monday, March 2. We will be completing assignments in class this week that can serve as a study guide. Students should also use the textbook and science notebook to review what we have learned. Click here to read the unit's overarching concepts and vocabulary (scroll down to Physical Science).

Have a great week,
Christina Polay

Hello everyone,

Although we are not having a Valentine's Day party, we will be exchanging valentines. If you choose to participate, please bring enough for each student (we have 26 kids now).

Literature Circles: We will have this round's first meeting on Tuesday.

Field Trip: Please come to school Wednesday on time, wearing your WAVE shirt, and carrying a sack lunch with a drink. Chaperones should come to the classroom at 8:30 and we will leave shortly after.

Our second science quiz is Thursday. Study guides will be returned tomorrow. Students should remember to use science vocabulary when answering questions. This applies not only to science. I expect that students use precise language whenever possible.

February is Black History Month. Students have begun a group project that requires some at-home research (see homework assignments below). We will work on the presentation in class.

Mission Project: Students have each been assigned a mission and will create a Keynote presentation. This will mostly be done in class, but you are welcome to check out a book from the library or research on your own at home. Information must be put into your own words.

Book Project: There are several parts to my Book Projects. Each student will give a Book Talk, complete a project, and turn in the Character Questions Sheet and Story Frame Form. Information was distributed in class about the Book Talk. It should include:
  • information about the setting, characters, and plot without giving away the ending.
  • your opinion of the book, with reasons and examples from the text.
  • a read aloud of an important part of the book. This is the only part of the presentation that you will read word-for-word. You might choose a section that shows an important character trait or theme of the story, that shows an important change in the plot, that includes a beautifully written description of the setting, or rich figurative language... the list is endless. Just be sure you choose a section that is worth reading out loud - and practice! You should also tell us why you chose the passage.

There are many project choices, and as I mentioned in class, I am open to new suggestions. Whatever you do should be your best work! It should follow the guidelines given in class, reflect a deep knowledge of the story elements, and be exceptionally neat and interesting. There isn't one set due date for the projects, but instead a range, from February 19th to the 27th. There will be a sign-up sheet posted in class on Tuesday.

Homework Assignments - Due Tuesday, February 17, except the Poem of the Week and the UCLA homework:
  • UCLA Sustainable Youth homework: Pick an animal in your neighborhood. Find out what it eats and what eats it.
  • Poem of the Week: This will be distributed in class on Tuesday, and will be due this Friday the 13th.
  • Math problem solving and practice sheets.
  • Science: Read pages 36-37 and answer the sheet in the packet.
  • Black History Month research: Paraphrase your findings on the sheet and write why your topic is important. You can also add to your group's padlet page.
  • I'd Rather Read Log.

Lastly, there are several families who have not yet contributed to the Annual Fund. Please consider giving any amount that you can so we can have 100% participation. Let's help support the programs we have at Warner -- and earn a fun rock climbing party, too! Thank you, thank you, thank you to those who have already given.

All the best,
Christina Polay
